Working over the festive season
24 December 2014There are many people that work over the festive season. In fact more people than ever work on Christmas Day, as more shops are open and more services are available to the public.
Retail sales, holiday transport services and the expectation that the local garage will be open for that extra bag of Brussels sprouts on the 25th December sees more and more people working through the holiday.
Traditionally, people think of the emergency services, breakdown services, taxi drivers, the health service and of course those in the hospitality industry. However, there is one group of people that are often overlooked as their work is unseen; air traffic controllers, who work through the holidays to make sure those flying off to be with family and friends or to escape to warmer climes are able to safely do so.
This group of people are also supported by other unseen festive workers, such as engineers, who are on call should they be needed at short notice.
We thank all the air traffic controllers, engineers, as well as shift workers everywhere, for keeping things going over the holiday period.

As a private pilot based in SE England, I’d like to send a huge thank you to the team at NATS for providing services which has certainly improved my flight safety. The ATC visit days that you have arranged with the GA community have been most informative and inspiring.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
