As we set a course for the new year, we thought it was a good time to reflect on our most popular web content for 2016; it gives us the chance to look again not just at the blog, but also our popular Discover features and the Drone Assist app.

At NATS we employ hundreds of people in unique roles that support our air traffic controllers in managing aircraft flying in our skies safely and efficiently. From Analysts to Engineers and Project Managers to Technicians, our employees are passionate about their roles and the contributions they make to air traffic management.

To become an air traffic controller requires a specific set of skills and attitude, things that can’t necessarily be taught or learned. For every successful controller validated, many thousand wash out during the process. But as you may suspect, for those that have what it takes it’s rewarding in every sense.

In the past, we have supported STEM activities to inspire students and show how these subjects are relevant to the real world. Recently we hosted a STEM event with a difference; this event was for the teachers rather than students.

After passing the online assessments, to become an air traffic controller, you will receive an email inviting you to attend Stage 2 of the process and so may be wondering how to prepare for this stage. We have some games which may be of interest as well as some other tips to help.

My colleagues have discussed how they became engineers with NATS and the importance of women in engineering. However, professional development is important for everyone and is encouraged by NATS. To be awarded a Fellowship by the IET is a tremendous personal achievement.

How much do you know about NATS? NATS is an exciting place to work and showing people the opportunities we offer and profiling the expertise and dedication of our people makes our annual Careers Open Day an important date in the diaries of my team. This year the date is Wednesday 9th December 2015, from 18:00 to 21:00.

As students everywhere are returning to, or starting, university or college, they’ll be taking the first steps on their career ladder. For planning placement years, organising apprenticeships or looking for work as graduates there are lots of options out there.

The opportunities for engineers, especially at NATS, are fantastic and you don’t get pigeon-holed into a particular niche, so you should not get bored.
